Working on Water

The last time I was in Lagos I was sad to see the buildings on stilts in the water was no longer there.

As we drove from the airport into town I was looking forward to seeing that city but to my dismay it was not there. I later learned that the city had been demolished for sanitary reasons and for it is being seen as standing in the way of Nigeria’s progress

The mayor of Lagos state is trying to clean up his town and he has done an amazing job but this city give lagos a certain charm and character … at least from the vantage point of my taxi on the bridge.

Couldn’t there be a solution where they could keep the city but make it clean and safe?

Well thankfully Kunlé Adeyemi’s a Nigerian Architect also sees beauty in these slums and is trying to do something to bring back that iconic landscape and make life in the slums sustainable.

His project is  the Makoko Floating School’, an innovative, prototype floating structure located on the lagoon heart of Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos.

The school is the first step in the overall plan to build a floating community by building proper and affordable housing for the people of Makoko.
